St Helier Festival Highlights 2013!

This years St Helier Festival held on a pleasantly sunny Saturday 8th June afternoon went exceedingly well attracting in the region of 8,000 visitors. The St Helier Festival celebrating its 5th consecutive year was reported to be its best year ever!

The event was opened by our Mayor, Sean Brennan, and Town Cryer Carole Williams. Cllr Ruth Dombey also gave a heartfelt speech to residents encouraging them visit the 'Save Our St Helier' stall to sign the petition to stop the proposed closure of St Helier Hospital.

The main attraction was the Big Top Circus and Workshop area, entertainment on the stage which included Dance groups, Cheerleaders, Kelly the Country and Western singer and not forgetting the unforgettable Elvis impersonator Ben who really 'shook everybody up' as he made a lasting impression singing Elvis songs.

All main contractors were present, along with their Mascots to meet with residents, and entered into the Mascot race, which was won by Lenny Lakehouse for the second year running. Our ‘Cyril the St Helier Squirrel' was a very close second just being beaten by Lenny to the finishing line by a whisker! PCSO Connie set the sirens going as she came in 3rd position.

The LBS 'Info Zone' which was situated on the main field this year, attracted a great deal of attention where information on local services was to hand.

Feedback from stall holders and residents alike were all very positve this year with comments that there was a real feeling of 'togetherness' on the main field as all the stalls were set out closer without any huge gaps which encouraged a more community feel.  All stall holders reported a very busy day! Compliments were given on the fact the Steering Group had taken on board what residents had said previous years about everything being on one field and liked the 'info Zone' area being situated on part of the main field and not closed away in a seperate marquee.

Praise was also given on the much busier Arena area this year with comments that the Pro Wrestling was great! Physical activities and sporting taster sessions were also going on all afternoon in the Arena track area along with the Wandle Valley School bikes and trikes.

Frank Berry, Chair of SFTRA said: "I am delighted that so many local residents came along to the Festival this year. I would like to extend our thanks to all the supporters and sponsors of the Festival who work tirelessly throughout the year to make sure the festival happens. There is always a real sense of community spirit on the day and I feel proud to have been a part of that."

The Festival is organisned by SFTRA, and the Steering Group, and supported by Sutton Housing Partnership, the London Borough of Sutton, David Weir Leisure Centre, Sutton Community First Funding, and contractors including Keepmoat, Lakehouse, Rydon, Smith and Byford, and Mulalley. The Steering Group would like to say a big Thank You to our contractors, and to KNK Contractors who have supported and worked as part of the Steering Group for the last 5 years.  A big Thank You also go to Kuehne + Nagel for supplying free soft drinks, 777 for supplying the Harris Rail Fencing for the stage area, and all who contributed to making this year such a huge success!

    Fallen Angels Project

Helping Older People Beat Scams

You may remember me as a former Councillor, and some of you may be aware that I have been involved in a project to raise awareness among older people of scams and thefts that have been aimed at this target group.
Please let me know if you know of any groups/organisations/individuals who might like details of the video or a copy of the DVD. I am happy for you to pass on my contact details if anyone wants further information, either about the project, or about Fallen Angels.

I am Chair of Fallen Angels, a local drama workshop group for over 50’s (details below), and over the past year, supported by the Safer Sutton Partnership and the Sutton Community Fund, we have worked on producing a video showing examples of scams and giving suggestions on how to avoid becoming a victim. We are all in the target age group ourselves, and thought this would be a good way of putting our acting and writing skills to practical use, as well as raising Fallen Angels’ profile within the local community. We are making the film available on YouTube, as well as on DVD for free distribution to local groups.

We would welcome your help in passing on details of the project to anyone you think will benefit from viewing the video.

Yours sincerely,

Joan Crowhurst,

Fallen Angels was founded in 1996 under the name of Charlie’s Angels, as a drama workshop group for the over-50’s. We originally met at the Charles Cryer Theatre in Carshalton, but when the Council wished to use the premises for other purposes we changed our name and moved to the meeting room at Wallington United Reformed Church in Stanley Park Road, Wallington. We meet weekly in term time on Thursdays from 2.00 to 4.00 pm. The group provide the opportunity for older people to meet others with an interest in theatre and acting, and to practise improvised and acted scenes purely for the entertainment of the group. The environment is supportive and the emphasis is on having fun, and we gain insights into acting techniques and direction as well. Our programme is planned and overseen by a professional co-ordinator: actress Tamara Wilder. The sessions enable people in our age group to combine social interaction with learning and activity, where we develop communication and creative skills, and no-one is obliged to perform in public unless they want to – we aren’t an "am-dram" group. We take part in theatre games, role-play, mime and musicals. We have tried stage combat, and devised potted versions of anything from Greek Tragedy to Dad’s Army. Anyone interested in joining can attend two sessions for free before committing. After that it’s £72 for a twelve-week term (£36 for half) in advance or £8 per session.

Promoting Healthy Eating at Carshalton Community Allotment.

EcoLocal are running monthly FREE Healthy Eating sessions at Carshalton Community Allotment. These activities are in addition to the twice weekly drop-in gardening sessions where anybody can come along to take part in growing healthy fresh veg to take home for free!

Poppy Berelowitz, EcoLocal’s Community Gardener said “With the price of food rising, and more food scares in the media, more and more people are interested in knowing where their food comes from and how to live sustainably. Our healthy eating sessions are fun and informal. People who have taken part so far have asked us to run more of them!”

Healthy Eating sessions will include, making soup, hot spiced fruit drinks, veggie wraps, BBQs and more, and will run on the following dates: 22nd February, 22nd March, 26th April, 31st May and 28th June. Free seasonal recipes will be provided.

The Carshalton Community Allotment has free gardening sessions every Monday and Friday. “Our food growing sessions are gaining in popularity!” said Poppy “People come along to grow their own veg, meet other people, or just to get out of the house and in the fresh air. It’s a relaxing, stress free environment and we welcome everybody whether they’ve had experience of gardening before or not.”
